NAAUSA Advocates for Undetectable Firearms Act Reauthorization

The Undetectable Firearms Act was enacted in 1988 to prohibit owning firearms that can pass through metal detectors unnoticed. Congress did not make the law permanent, but it has been extended twice over the last 25 years. Unfortunately, the most recent authorization is set to expire on March 8, 2024 when government funding lapses. NAAUSA feels this legislation is critical to deterring the creation of these harmful and evasive weapons. Therefore, NAAUSA called upon Congress to reauthorize the legislation. Historically, the law has deterred manufacturers from creating undetectable firearms. As a result, very few prosecutions have been pursued under the law. Nonetheless, this deterrent effect has been critical for ensuring undetectable firearms are not created and used in a manner that undermines public safety.
